Small Steps, Big Impact: 6 Simple Changes You Can Make To Help Protect The Environment

Let's Work Together and Protect The Environment (We Only Get One)
With the world becoming increasingly aware that we need to protect the environment, it's now essential for us to take responsibility for our actions and their impact on the planet. Policies and global agreements play a huge role, but individual actions should not be underestimated. Here, we look at some simple but effective changes that everyone can incorporate into their every day lives. This has the ability to really help protect the environment.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Before making a purchase, think: 'is it really necessary?' Not only will this help save money (always a bonus!) but waste is obviously hugely reduced by reducing consumption. So many items can be recycled, from paper and plastic to electronics and batteries, so it's always best to sort waste and recycle properly.
Turn Off and Unplug
Switch off lights, appliances, and chargers when not in use, as when left on, the energy they use unnecessarily causes "phantom" energy consumption. By carefully picking appliances with good energy efficiency ratings, electricity consumption will be reduced. Remember to use natural light where possible by opening blinds and curtains during the day. This will minimise the amount of time lights are turned on for.

Walk, Bike, Or Use Public Transport
Whenever possible, opt for walking, cycling, or public transportation to reduce carbon emissions from extra vehicles. Sharing rides with friends, family, or co-workers will reduce the number of vehicles on the road (and your collective fuel costs)! Consider switching to electric or hybrid vehicles if possible, again to reduce emissions and protect the environment.
Shop Locally (The Food From Local Farmers Markets Is Tastier Too)
Support local businesses and farmers' markets to reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation and packaging. Choose sustainable products by looking for eco-friendly and recycled materials. Also, reduce your meat consumption by cutting down; this will hugely decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with livestock farming.
Minimise Water Usage
Use low-flow showerheads and toilets to reduce water usage. Remember to turn off taps when brushing teeth, and try to collect rainwater for gardening. If possible, reuse water (e.g. using leftover cooking water for plants).
Plant, Grow, Enjoy!
Trees are super important as they absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen. This makes them vital for mitigating climate change. Consider planting trees in your local community and support other efforts to do so. Try composting food scraps as it reduces methane emissions from landfills, and produces nutrient-rich soil for gardens. Always opt for eco-friendly cleaning products that are biodegradable and free from harsh chemicals. (This benefits you and the environment!)

Final Thoughts
While the challenges facing our planet may seem scary, every small change can add up to a huge, positive impact on the environment. These simple changes to our daily lives contribute to the protection and preservation of the environment for current and future generations. Together, let's commit to making sustainable choices. We can make a huge difference!
