The Basics of Feng Shui: Transform your Home with our Helpful 5 Minute Guide
What are the Basics of Feng Shui?
Ever felt like there's something not quite right in a room? You've moved the furniture but the layout seems wrong. Feng Shui may be your solution. It is an ancient Chinese practice, dating back over 3,000 years, that aims to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. Feng Shui, pronounced "fung shway," translates to "wind-water" in English. The primary goal is to balance the energies of a space by arranging furniture, decor, and building structures in a way that optimizes the flow of energy, or "chi."
The Five Elements
A central concept in Feng Shui is balancing the five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, which represent different qualities and is associated with specific colours, shapes, and materials.
- Wood - growth and vitality. Uses green or brown colours, and incorporate plants and wooden furniture.
- Fire - passion and energy. Use red, strong lighting, and triangular shapes.
- Earth - stability and nourishment. Use yellows, ceramics, and square shapes.
- Metal - clarity and precision. Use white, grey, and metallic objects.
- Water - wisdom and serenity. Use blue or black, mirrors, and flowing shapes.
Basic Feng Shui Tips
- Declutter: A clutter-free space promotes a smooth flow of chi. Keep your home tidy and organized.
- Use Mirrors Wisely: Mirrors can enhance light and energy but should be placed thoughtfully. Avoid positioning mirrors directly opposite doors or windows.
- Balance Elements: Incorporate all five elements into your home decor to create a balanced environment.
- Get Your Entryway Right: The front door is considered the "mouth of chi." Ensure it's clean, well-lit, de-cluttered and welcoming. Use a solid door and incorporate a welcoming mat.
- Arrange Furniture Thoughtfully: Position furniture to facilitate movement and interaction. Avoid placing beds and desks directly in line with doors.
Furniture Placement in Each Room
Living Room Seating Arrangement - Arrange seating in a circular or octagonal shape to promote conversation and a sense of community. Ensure seats have a view of the door but aren’t directly in line with it.
Bedroom - Position the bed in the 'command position'. This means you can see the door from where you sleep, but it's not directly in line with the door. Your bed should have a solid Headboard and you should minimise the amount of electronics in your room to promote a restful sleep. Symmetry is also important, so place nightstands and lamps on both sides of the bed to create balance.
Office - Again, place the desk in the command position, where you can see the door but are not directly in line with it. This position gives you control and support. Keep your workspace tidy and organised to encourage productivity. You could also incorporate inspiring decor like plants, art, or personal achievements.
